The Research Institute for Nature and Forest is the Flemish research and knowledge centre for nature and its sustainable management and use. Since 1948, the research unit on Forest Genetic Resources has been developing long-term breeding strategies for tree species with a major economical importance, resulting in the selection and creation of genetically superior forest basic material and in the conservation of forest genetic resources. Fields of excellence are experimental design of nursery and field trials, protocols for assessment of adaptive traits, quantitative genetics, fully operational techniques for vegetative and generative propagation, protocols for artificial infection with major pathogens, development and analysis of molecular markers.
