ICAS is a governmental institution in charge of both forest research, national forest inventory and the preparation of the forest management plans. Its mission is to produce and disseminate scientific and technical information for the implementation of new technologies in the public and private forestry sectors. The research activities aim to promote competitiveness, ensure forest sustainability and grow opportunities through research.
Active breeding programmes are being carried out in all major forest tree species. All activities in practical tree breeding in Romania are carried out by ICAS. Genetics and Tree breeding Laboratory. ICAS is a participant in all EUFORGEN networks, has an active role in the joint TREEBREEDEX database of forest trials as well as national database of field trials and gene conservation units as national focal point in EUFGIS. Forestry Geomatics Laboratory is a division specialized in combining different geomatics techniques like GIS, remote sensing and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for forestry research purposes.
