The unit offers access to:

  • Fully equipped facility for wood/biomass preparation including:
    • Wood mills: Retch SM1; SM200O; ZM100
    • Screening apparatus: Retch
  • Fully equipped wood chemistry lab including:
    • 12 Soxhlet extractors
    • 2 muffle furnace for Ash
    • 4 ovens
  • Laboratory scale pulping unit including:
    • Pulping: M/K system laboratory digester; multi-batch digester prototype
  • Spectroscopy laboratory (NIR and ATR-FTIR)
    • FT-NIR spectrometers Bruker MPA and Vectror Vector 22/NI with integration sphere and fibre probe accessories;
    • FT-IR spectrometer Bruker Alpha with transmission and ATR accessory

Examples of application

The Center has been involved in high throughput phenotyping in the frame of several improvement programs in Portugal, Spain, France, Australia and in an integrated platform of genotyping of Mercosur.

Highlights include the first reported estimation of the heritability of lignin composition of two important species for pulping namely Pinus pinaster (H/G) and Eucalyptus globulus (S/G) in collaboration with French and Australian researchers.
