Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda (SIRA)

Trees4Future is the first and largest integrated infrastructure innovation and research project to build bridges between the numerous research groups around forests in Europe: these bridges are built between eco-physiologists, geneticists, wood quality and technology labs, and climate change, and forest management modelling groups.

As a result of Trees4Future, we expect e.g. to be able to design a wood product to have optimal characteristics, starting from gene level. The envisaged cooperation between researchers and end-users of research will shorten the path of turning ideas into innovative products and services that will create growth and jobs in Europe.  Integrating Activities also aim to structure better and incorporate, on a European scale, the way research infrastructures operate and foster their joint development in terms of capacity and performance.

Trees4Future establishes a long-lasting integrated research infrastructure, enabling access and utilisation of the project results also beyond the project duration, thus contributing to the Europe 2020 strategy and the European Research Area - ERA. Thematic European networks are created in the project, and a roadmap to durable integration is designed now in the latter half of the project. Trees4future engages in dialogue with key identified forest sector stakeholder groups in order to develop and communicate a strategic research agenda focusing on challenges such as improved and sustainable production methods, optimal use of forest resources to various industrial and societal needs and mitigation of climate change. This dialogue involves existing and well recognized platforms and networks such as FTP (Forest-based sector technology platform), IUFRO, CEPI, CEI-Bois, EOS, EPF, IW, EFI and other European, national and regional stakeholders identified.

An important result of broad-based interaction with stakeholders is a Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda (SIRA), which can be downloaded here.

The SIRA is based on two main inputs: firstly, on a survey that was widely disseminated amongst the research community and secondly on interviews with stakeholders, which included a short section specifically incorporated to collect stakeholder inputs for the SIRA.

The strategic innovation and research agenda (SIRA) identifies key themes, key possibilities to cooperate and potential funding sources (European, transnational, national and regional funding) to which the implementation of this the agenda would be of high relevance.

Key guidance in the strategic innovation and research agenda development process was sought from:

  • key objectives of Trees4Future, tree breeding, forestry research
  • expectations of practitioners and stakeholders
  • consideration of what research efforts should be enhanced

Acknowledgements

A research agenda can only be convincing when it is based on a broad range of expert inputs. Our undivided gratitude goes to the 480 experts who contributed to an online survey. It took us some time to go through all the input on our four open questions, but we considered it well worth the effort and we are happy to present a broad-shared result.
